MISSION

SUPPORT COLLABORATION OF DIVISIONAL PROGRAMS

IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF FAR WEST SKI RACERS,

WITH THE GOAL OF BEING THE BEST DIVISION IN THE NATION

The Far West Development Initiative is a multi-phased plan to raise the level of ski racing in the Far West Division. Recognizing we are stronger together, the Far West programs have come together to support our division with resources for athletes, coaches, and parents.

Phase I launches with the Young Skiers Guide, targeted to our U12 ski racers. This booklet is visual guide with montages and stills of world cup ski racers that grounds the beginning ski racer in the fundamentals of a turn.  Selected montages are accompanied by QR codes played at half speed, so that the young racer can also view the turn sequence in motion to absorb the nuances of the fundamentals in action.  The booklet contains an athlete section on, “How to become the best racer you can be,” and also a Parent Corner full with tips on how to support one’s athlete and the nuts and bolts of the sport.

Just as in school, no student tool is complete without proper guidance from a knowledgable teacher. Phase I also includes a Coach Pocket Guide.  The Pocket Guide, a 4x6 spiral bound booklet, is a companion resource that uses the same visuals as the Young Skiers Guide.  Printed on special weather-proof paper, the guide includes a short explanation of the Key Concepts, what to look for, why, identification of common mistakes in execution, as well as drills for addressing these.  The Pocket Guide is a practical, complimentary tool for the coach that allows the learning directly to the hill.

The final piece of the trio will be a Coach Manual for the Young Skier, which will expand on the fundamental concepts and Pocket Guide content in detail.  The Coaches Manual is anticipated to be available in the Spring 2019.

Phase II of the FWDI will address the Emerging Ski Racer with the same trifold approach: a visual athlete guide, a coach pocket guide and a coaches’ manual.  It will cover more advanced topics relevant to the U14/16 ski racer.
